ABOUT VIV
Since childhood, my love for drawing has been a constant passion. I recall adorning my bedroom wall with vibrant wax crayon creations, often landing me in trouble. However, once I was provided with paper to channel my creativity, harmony was restored.
Growing up in the midst of nature was my main source of inspiration. Living near the South Downs and the Sea allowed me easy access to the outdoors. My father, a painter and nature lover, frequently took my brother and me on outdoor excursions armed with a butterfly net and sketchbook. He supplied us with nature books, encouraging exploration of the outdoors and leading us to a special spot to witness the sunrise over Hindover Hill. We owe him a great deal for instilling in us a love for, respect of, and ability to document and paint the natural world.
I find complete contentment in nature, enveloped by its sights and sounds. A profound connection exists, where peace and exhilaration harmoniously coexist, transcending words to express my personal bond with it.
Nature has been a significant source of healing for me, particularly during periods of physical and mental struggles in adulthood. Tapping into this special relationship has provided me with hope, resilience, acceptance, and numerous opportunities to share the gentle yet potent forces of nature.
Artist Statement
For me, Nature, Music, Dance, Poetry, and Painting are all intertwined, akin to the five senses that can be creatively utilised at any given moment. My art is inspired by whatever captures my attention - whether it's the subtle sound of a fish breaking the water’s surface, the call of a crow perched on a branch above, or the buzz of bees in their daily routine. Sometimes, it's grand scenes like crashing waves or a storm leaving fallen trees; however, it's always a fleeting moment that sparks my imagination and compels me to paint.
Colour fascinates me, driving my exploration, although I also appreciate monochrome work even though I rarely create it. My paintings are primarily products of my imagination; a single sight can trigger the initial creative spark, leading to a chain reaction. I follow this creative flow willingly, balancing spontaneity with control.
Observation plays a crucial role as I watch butterflies flutter, frogs leap, birds soar, trees sway, and leaves descend - all part of my everyday experiences like collecting leaves, stones, shells, grasses, dead insects, bird feathers, and various treasures during my wanderings.
Primarily an imaginative painter with a growing abstract touch, I predominantly work with water-based media yet remain open to experimenting with different tools. I embrace my artistic journey with enthusiasm and an open heart, eagerly anticipating the adventures that lie ahead.
